Jon Baker and Frank “Ponch” Poncherello have just joined the California Highway Patrol (CHP) in Los Angeles but for very different reasons. Baker (Dax Shepard) is a beaten up pro motorbiker trying to put his life and marriage back together. Poncherello (Michael Pena) is a cocky undercover Federal agent investigating a multi-million dollar heist that may be an inside job. The inexperienced rookie and hardened pro are teamed together, but clash more than click in the latest, profanity-laced, red-band trailer!
When it comes to these R-rated, comedy remakes of older TV shows, I feel that red-band is really the only way to go. Unfortunately this trailer doesn't really paint a much brighter picture as far as the movie is concerned. The gross-out conversational humor feels like it's 10 years too late to the party, and everything else has a "been there, done that" feel to it. More importantly, I'm not really feeling the chemistry between Shepard and Pena. Given this month's release of LOGAN, KONG: SKULL ISLAND and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, there's no question that this one's going to fall by the wayside.
CHIPS will open in theaters on March 31, 2017.
