The George A. Romero classic Dawn of the Dead (get it HERE) has received a 3D conversion, with producer Richard P. Rubinstein supervising the conversion process frame-by-frame, and that 3D version of the movie has been enjoying a theatrical run at 250 Regal Cinemas theatres across the United States for the last four days. When this theatrical run was first announced, it was only supposed to last from October 28th through the 31st – but tickets have been selling so well, Regal Cinemas is extending the run until November 10th! So fans have ten more days to catch Dawn of the Dead on the big screen in 3D. Tickets are now on sale at RegMovies.com.
The Regal Cinemas press release says that “Due to unprecedented ticket presales, George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead in 3D has been extended to play at Regal Cinemas until November 10th. … Every generation this movie finds new fans. That has a lot to do with the absolute explosion of zombies in popular culture the past two decades, from The Walking Dead to 28 Days Later. However, this trilogy (Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead) is the original zombie outbreak, it’s where it all began, that’s why their popularity compounds every year.
The reason to revisit the film or even see it a first time, is the unbelievable conversion into 3D. It’s not a gimmick! Fans will get to see it in a whole new light. It’s a magnified immersive roller coaster ride of thrills, chills, comedy, and relatable characters in jeopardy on a big screen.
The movie is not available on any streaming platform anywhere. It isn’t on cable, and has been out-of-print on DVD and Blu-ray in the U.S. for over a decade. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the original, uncut 1979 US theatrical release version of Dawn of the Dead, lovingly and meticulously adapted to 3-D format under the frame-by-frame supervision of Dawn’s original producer, Richard P. Rubinstein.“
Written and directed by Romero, Dawn of the Dead has the following synopsis:
As hordes of zombies swarm over the U.S., the terrified populace tries everything in their power to escape the attack of the undead, but neither cities nor the countryside prove safe. In Pennsylvania, radio-station employee Stephen and his girlfriend, Francine, escape in the station helicopter, accompanied by two renegade SWAT members, Roger and Pete. The group retreats to the haven of an enclosed shopping center to make what could be humanity’s last stand.
The film stars Ken Foree, Scott Reiniger, Gaylen Ross, David Emge, and Tom Savini.
