Another Hollywood legend has passed on. This morning brings the news that veteran British actor David Warner, known for his roles in Titanic and The Omen, died at 80.
The BBC reported the news, revealing that Warner passed away on Sunday at Denville Hall, a care home for entertainment industry members with “a cancer-related illness.” The actor’s family confirmed the news via a statement to the BBC:
“Over the past 18 months he approached his diagnosis with a characteristic grace and dignity. He will be missed hugely by us, his family and friends, and remembered as a kind-hearted, generous, and compassionate man, partner, and father, whose legacy of extraordinary work has touched the lives of so many over the years. We are heartbroken.”
Warner was born in Manchester, England, in July 1941. He began his foray into acting by studying at the prestigious British drama school, the Royal Academy of Dramatic. He saw his first bit of success in 1966 opposite Vanessa Redgrave playing the titular character in the British film Morgan: A Suitable Case for Treatment. The role earned him a BAFTA nomination for his efforts.
His career spanned cinema, theater, and television, and he would go on to win a Supporting Actor Emmy for his turn as a Roman senator in the ABC miniseries Masada, released in 1981. Warner also starred in several productions of Star Trek, so he’s also well-known amongst sci-fi fans. He is probably best known by most for some of his more mainstream films. He played Jennings in the 1976 horror hit, The Omen, and he played Spicer Lovejoy in James Cameron’s box office and awards season behemoth, Titanic. Also, if you’re from a particular generation like me, you know him for playing Professor Jordon Perry in 1991’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze. His most recent credits include 2018’s Disney remake, Mary Poppins Returns.
David Warner is survived by his partner Lisa Bowerman, son Luke, daughter-in-law Sarah, and his first wife, Harriet. Our thoughts are with his family and fans during this difficult time. Were YOU a fan of David Warner? Share some of his favorite roles and performances in the comments below!
