David S. Pumpkins stars in his own animated special!

Expanding SNL characters past their initial 5-10 minute lifespans is always a risky endeavor. Some of these characters prove particularly malleable and successful in a longer format – such as BLUES BROTHERS and WAYNE'S WORLD – while most are awful trainwrecks like IT'S PAT! and LADIES MAN. So I'm iffy about expanding the David S. Pumpkins sketch any longer than it already is. To be fair, his animated special – aptly titled THE DAVID S. PUMPKINS HALLOWEEN SPECIAL – will only be thirty minutes, but even that might be too long, especially since his whole gimmick is that he doesn't really have a backstory.

Anyway, here's the official synopsis:

Set in a small suburban town on All Hallows’ Eve, the special centers on David Pumpkins and his skeleton sidekicks who show a young boy and his sister the true meaning of Halloween, answering none of their questions along the way.

And here are some clips:

Honestly, the animation is actually pretty good, and I don't like going in with preconceived notions (though I am only human), so this could honestly be fun. You never know. Also I liked the sketch, so I'll at least give it a chance.

But what about you Schmoes? You a fan of the original sketch? And if so, you gonna check out the new animated special? Either way, sound off below!

Meanwhile, you can see Tom Hanks voice the animated David S. Pumpkins on NBC October 28th.
