A few years ago David Letterman retired from THE LATE SHOW (now hosted by Stephen Colbert), a thus one the great voices left the airwaves to embrace the life of afternoon napping and Netflix binging. In the meantime, Letterman has famously grown a huge beard and made some appearances here and there, but now the TV vet is ready to return, and this time he’s coming to you via the most popular streaming service in the land – Netflix.
The streaming giant announced in a press release today that they and David Letterman will be teaming up for a six-episode series that will involve Letterman interviewing a singular guest in an hour-long format, with other topics explored “on his own, away from the studio.” No title has been announced for the show, but it's set to debut in 2018.
Letterman expressed his excitement over the project with a very Letterman statement:
I feel excited and lucky to be working on this project for Netflix. Here's what I have learned, if you retire to spend more time with your family, check with your family first. Thanks for watching, drive safely.
Netflix’s Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos also put out a statement, and like us is wondering if the host will keep his epic beard:
Just meeting David Letterman was a thrill; imagine how exciting it is for me to announce that we will be working together. David Letterman is a true television icon, and I can’t wait to see him out in the wild, out from behind the desk and interviewing the people he finds most interesting. We’ll have to see if he keeps the beard.
David Letterman is one of the most genuine, intelligent and wittiest personalities ever to grace TV screens, so the fact Netflix is letting him do a show that showcases the best of his talents is pure magic. No one does it quite like him, and his interviewing skills are just as sharp as his comedic mind, so watching the show for these discussions alone will make this must-see viewing. Who knows, maybe he and Jon Stewart will have a chat while getting a shave.
