David F. Sandberg talks problem solving while picking apart Shazam! scenes

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

No matter what type of film you're making or how much money you have behind you, there will always be problems which you'll need to solve on the fly. Could be a crew-member in the background of a shot which you never noticed, or perhaps you don't have access to a particular actor on the day. SHAZAM! director David F. Sandberg has posted a new video on YouTube which examines several scenes from the recent superhero film and discusses problem solving in film-making, expanding on something which he talks about on the SHAZAM! commentary track.

"While I poke fun at interpreting accidents as deliberate there are definitely details in Shazam that are intentional and not mistakes," Sandberg added on Twitter. "Details like how the eye of sin reflects in young Sivana's right eye or how the wardrobe is different in different people's memories. What I’m saying is, it’s not all dumb luck when I direct movies. Just most of the time."

The official synopsis for SHAZAM!:

We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Asher Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult superhero Shazam (Zachary Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong).

SHAZAM! will hit 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray/DVD on July 16th, but you can get it on Digital right now!
