David F. Sandberg is convinced Annabelle 2 will be better than the original

Director David F. Sandberg will be helming ANNABELLE 2 after his previous collaboration with producer James Wan, this summer's LIGHTS OUT. The CONJURING spinoff made beaucoup bucks, so of course it earned itself a sequel, but the question is this: ANNABELLE wasn't particularly great, so why watch the sequel?

Sandberg insists that the film, which will revolve around a "nun who is worried that her orphans are becoming prey to an evil entity," is going to be a major improvement on the original. Honestly, it wouldn't be too hard to do, at least from a story standpoint. We'll all have to wait and see how LIGHTS OUT pans out, but for now I'm convinced he can do it.

Here's the full quote:

I don’t think I can give too many details at this point but it’s not a continuation of the first film. That’s one of the many things that enticed me with the project, that it’s new story. Also the setting and the time period of this one is perfect for a horror movie.

The script is really good and I think that this is a sequel that will actually be better than the original. The ‘Godfather II’ of creepy doll movies as I like to call it.

ANNABELLE 2 is set to haunt theaters on May 19, 2017.
