David Dastmalchian launches genre production company Good Fiend Films

David Dastmalchian, who played Polka-Dot Man in The Suicide Squad, has launched a genre production company called Good Fiend Films

Character actor David Dastmalchian, who may be best known these days for playing Polka-Dot Man in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, has launched a production company called Good Fiend Films, with the intention being to “produce character-driven projects across horror, sci-fi and fantasy for film, television, audio and publishing.” According to Deadline, Dastmalchian “envisions his shingle as a home for stories about complex characters from all walks of life. Good Fiend Films will aim to generate nostalgic, entertaining content that captivates audiences while reminding them they’re not alone in this scary world.

Although the Good Fiend Films announcement is new, the first movie on the company’s slate is one we first heard about eight months ago: the 1977-set horror film Late Night With the Devil, which is coming to us from the Australian writing and directing duo of Colin and Cameron Cairnes (100 Bloody Acres). Dastmalchian stars in the film, which is about a live broadcast unleashing evil into a nation’s living rooms.

Dastmalchian provided the following statement to Deadline: “It’s an exciting time for elevated genres and I am grateful to be entering the marketplace with a strong collection of ideas and projects at various stages of creation. I have been blessed with the good fortune of collaborating with some of the best minds in entertainment and I have learned so much about myself and the craft of storytelling. At this stage in my journey of mental wellness and addiction recovery, I’m honored to be leading Good Fiend Films as we wrestle with tough questions through the entertaining lens of science fiction, horror, and superhero narratives.

In addition to The Suicide Squad, Dastmalchian’s credits include The Dark Knight, Prisoners, Ant-Man, The Belko Experiment, Gotham, Twin Peaks, Blade Runner 2049, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Birdbox, Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, MacGyver, The Flash, Batman: The Long Halloween, All Creatures Here Below, What If…?, and Dune. He is also the creator of the Count Crowley comic book series and plays a horror host character called Dr. Fearless.

Dastmalchian happens to be one of my favorite actors, and I think it’s very cool that he’s getting into producing genre projects. What do you think of the Good Fiend Films news? Let us know by leaving a comment below.
