Canadian filmmakers Jen and Sylvia Soska, the "Twisted Twins" behind such films as AMERICAN MARY and SEE NO EVIL 2, will soon be updating the work of a Canadian legend, as the duo has signed on to direct a remake of David Cronenberg's 1977 film RABID.
The original film centered on porn star Marilyn Chambers as
a woman injured in a motorcycle accident who underwent a surgical operation and developed a stinger that she uses to feed on people's blood — triggering an outbreak of a rabies-like epidemic that turned its victims into bloodthirsty zombies.
In this zombie-mad age, it's really no surprise that the decision has been made to go back to the concept of RABID. The remake will be produced by Paul Lalonde and Michael Walker with John Vidette's Somerville House Releasing, and the producers are also planning to turn RABID into a TV show.
The Soskas released the following statement:
The work of David Cronenberg is legendary and ‘Rabid’ is much more than just a horror movie. The real message of his film is powerful, and even more pivotal as we look at the world around us today. It’s an honor to be involved in this love letter to his original, which we handle with the same respect as Paul Schrader’s ‘Cat People,’ Alexandre Aja’s ‘The Hills Have Eyes’ and John Carpenter’s ‘The Thing.'"
Well, they're saying the right things to get this project off to a good start.
The RABID redux is set to start filming in Canada this summer.
