Benioff and Weiss may write only one entry in their Star Wars trilogy

In four months, the Skywalker Saga comes to an end with STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER, but that doesn’t mean we’re done with Star Wars content by a long shot. While director Rian Johnson is excited to explore new characters with his new trilogy, GAME OF THRONES showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will tackle a trilogy of their very own. In the case of Benioff and Weiss, it was believed that the duo would write (on top of produce) all three entries in the series, but it turns out they may not be as heavily involved with each movie as we once thought.

According to a piece in The Hollywood Reporter about the duo’s new, absurd $250 million development deal with Netflix, the two may actually only be contractually obligated to write only one movie in the series, though it’s not said which one it would be.

Sources say the Thrones pair is writing a treatment for a Star Wars trilogy and is committed to penning at least one of the films (the original deal was to write all three). It's unclear if the duo, who also have another feature for Fox/Disney carved out, will do more than just write for Star Wars.

News of Lucasfilm bringing the two onboard for a Star Wars trilogy came in February, two months before the final season of GAME OF THRONES debuted. The two wrote the final four episodes of the six-episode season, which ended up being the worst-reviewed and most divisive season of the series. According to Disney CEO Bob Iger, the first new Star Wars movie to hit theaters after RISE OF SKYWALKER will likely be the first entry from Benioff and Weiss, which will come after a short hiatus for the movies.

Now, it is important to note the language from the piece, which reports that they are committed to writing "at least" one movie. Now, they could write all three, or at least set up the story for all three and let some other writers handle the full scripts for two movies.  That means the duo may not be as deeply involved in the crafting of the movies, but the fact is these guys are stuffing their plates with upcoming projects. Netflix is going to want their money's worth from them, so that means working on whatever it is the service paid one-quarter of a billion dollars for, while at the same time working on STAR WARS, which might also come with a lot of expectations from what is the biggest movie studio on the planet.
