David Ayer says his Suicide Squad cut was “beaten into a comedy”

Ever since the news broke that Zack Snyder's cut of JUSTICE LEAGUE was becoming a reality on HBO Max, director David Ayer has been pretty vocal about having his own cut of SUICIDE SQUAD seeing the light of day. According to Ayer, it wouldn't take much time or work to make this happen and he has taken to Twitter once again to let fans know that the film we received in 2016 wasn't the film he set out to make.

Among a slew of tweets over the weekend, Ayer discussed the 2015 Comic-Con trailer for SUICIDE SQUAD when one of his followers said the Comic-Con trailer was the “greatest isolated piece” of content from the movie. Ayer responded to the tweet and he seemed to agree with their assessment:

Ayer seems to make that argument that the darker, moodier tone of Snyder’s BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, which was shared in part by SUICIDE SQUAD, was something that needed to be changed to the tone of the more gleefully R-rated DEADPOOL. This became the template upon which Ayer’s cut was edited to match.  Ayer goes on to explain further in a tweet that responds to a follower who agrees with Ayer's sentiments about how DEADPOOL seem to influence SUICIDE SQUAD during post-production:

I actually had to go back and re-watch the Comic-Con trailer because I honestly didn't remember it. The trailer does present a film that appears a bit different than the finished product. I'm still not sure where I stand on having all these different cuts of films becoming the new normal when the theatrical cut isn't met with the greatest enthusiasm but considering that Ayer has been pretty vocal about the theatrical cut of SUICIDE SQUAD not being 100% his vision, I am curious to see what his original take was.
