Looks like SAW 2-4 and REPO: THE GENETIC OPERA director Darren Lynn Bousman wants his shot at (once again) rebooting the LEPRECHAUN series. His pitch is that the little green meanie would find himself a time machine and then haul his tiny terrifying ass back to the Colorado Gold Rush to no doubt pan for some gold and kills lots of people while he's at it. And probably smoke a lot of weed as well. He does that now, right?
Bousman took to Twitter to let us all know:
It’s that time of year again where I remind my good friends at Lionsgate that I still want to reboot the Leprechaun movie (AGAIN). Lep gets in a time machine and goes back to the Colorado Gold Rush. You guys have my number, I’ll be sitting by the phone.
Hell, the little guy has been to space and the hood (twice) by this point so why not back in time. Makes sense to me. But that said, is Bousman really being serious here? Hard to say. But it looks like he just might be considering that the filmmakers told EW in 2014:
I have always loved the Leprechaun franchise. So much so I pleaded desperately to anyone who would listen to let me direct a reboot some years back. There was something so ridiculously fun and silly about them. A lot of people shunned the sequels, but for my money, nothing is better than watching a franchise let its villain go to Vegas, space, the hood, and then back to the hood.
The most recent entry in the series was LEPRECHAUN RETURNS. Written by Suzanne Keilly (ASH VS EVIL DEAD) LEPRECHAUN RETURNS features Linden Porco (CHANNEL ZERO: BUTCHER'S BLOCK) taking over the titular role from Warwick Davis in the film which follows:
The deadly, wisecracking Leprechaun is back in all his gory glory. When the sorority sisters of the Alpha Upsilon house decide to go green and use an old well as their water source, they unwittingly awaken a pint-sized, green-clad monster. The Leprechaun wants a pot of gold buried near the sorority house, but first, he must recover his powers with a killing spree—and only the girls of AU can stop him.
This reboot, not unlike Blumhouse's HALLOWEEN, ignores all the sequels following the original film and picks right up when the original left off, albeit 25 years later. Porco's prey includes Taylor Spreitler, Pepi Sonuga, Sai Bennett, and original LEPRECHAUN star Mark Holton. LEPRECHAUN RETURNS crawled out of a well in the middle of the woods and onto VOD and DVD via Lionsgate back in December. Snag a copy on DVD HERE.
