The Wrap has learned Netflix has ordered 21 episodes of a live-action Richie Rich series produced by AwesomenessTV. DARK SKIES actor Jake Brennan will play "the poor little rich boy" in the half-hour comedy series, and it will also star Joshua Carlon (Sam & Cat), Jenna Ortega (INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 2), Lauren Taylor, Kiff VandenHeuvel (BEHIND THE CANDELABRA) and Brooke Wexler.
In the comics and cartoons (as well as the terrible 1994 Macaulay Culkin film), Richie Rich is loaded because of his parents, however in Netflix's upcoming series, it'll be Richie who is the breadwinner. So how did he make so much green? By going green, of course.
In this adaptation of the 1980s cartoon based on a comic from the 1950s, Richie has made a trillion dollars from inventing and selling a cool new green technology. After Richie moves into a decked out mansion and instantly starts living the most awesome life ever, the show will cover his adventures with his friends.
Netflix has done a great job with their original content, however I'm not sure how many kids will want to check out their upcoming series, and I highly doubt most adults are going to want to watch it either. Maybe it will be another win for Netflix, but I just don't think there's much interest in a live-action Richie Rich series.
Richie Rich will debut on Netflix sometime in early 2015.
