Danny McBride says new Halloween will pay homage to all the sequels

When David Gordon Green and Danny McBride's upcoming HALLOWEEN hits theaters this October, it will take its place as the 11th film in the franchise, but as we know, the film will be going back to basics and ignoring everything which followed John Carpenter's original HALLOWEEN. However, that's not to say that those HALLOWEEN sequels will be unceremoniously dumped out on the curb, as co-writer Danny McBride spoke with Flickering Myth at SXSW to say that the new film will be paying homage to the sequels.

The Halloween franchise has kind of become a little bit of like a choose your own adventure, you know like there’s some many different versions, and the timeline is already kind of so mixed up, we just thought it would be easier to go back to the source and continue from from there. It was nicer than knowing you’re working on Halloween 11, it just seemed cooler, ‘we’re making Halloween 2‘. We do [reference the other movies]. For fans, we pay homage and respect to every Halloween that has been out there.

Those references likely won't be substantial in any way, but it will be interesting to see what sort of HALLOWEEN easter eggs they're able to put in the new film, just so long as it's not the Curse of Thorn. It seems that the original movie is the main focus as Danny McBride has previously said that their aim is to capture the same tone as the John Carpenter film. "The original is all about tension. Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) doesn't even know that Michael Myers exists until the last minutes of the movie. So much of it you're in anticipation of what's going to happen and the dread that Carpenter spins so effortlessly in that film, I think we were really trying to get it back to that," McBride said. "We're trying to mine that dread. Mine that tension and not just go for gore and ultra-violence that you see some horror movies lean on. To us, it was all about bringing back the creep factor and trying to find the horror in your own backyard, in our own homes." In addition to Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode, HALLOWEEN will also star Judy Greer as Laurie's daughter, Karen, Andi Matichak as Allyson, Karen's daughter and Laurie's granddaughter, and will mark the return of Nick Castle as The Shape.
