Danny McBride gets religious and greedy in The Righteous Gemstones trailer

THE RIGHTEOUS GEMSTONES is just one in a plethora of new shows HBO is unveiling this year, and after a few brief looks, the network debuted the most recent promo for the series starring Danny McBride, John Goodman, Adam DeVine and more. Centering on a family that built a televangelist empire, McBride plays Jesse Gemstone, who’s trying to keep it all together in the name of the Lord…and that sweet, sweet money. But mostly the Lord, I’m sure.

Created, written and directed by McBride, he also executive produces alongside frequent collaborators Jody Hill and David Gordon Green (HALLOWEEN). McBride teamed with HBO in the past for the brilliant EASTBOUND & DOWN, but this show is looking a bit more darkly comic as it balances family dysfunction and the very real, shady business of the insanely profitable televangelist industry. McBride and the rest of the cast look great, and the premise is an interesting one to tackle for a comedy series.

We have about a month to go before the show debuts on August 18, so this won't be the first of the promos we see. A big selling point will be the ensemble cast, with McBride, Goodman and DeVine being the big names turning in excellent, on-point work, with Edi Patterson looking to do some scene-stealing of her own as Judy Gemstone. Everything about this show looks great, and even with shows like WATCHMEN on the horizon, this is perhaps my most anticipated of HBO's new lineup. Bring on the greed and religious hypocrisy!

Here’s the synopsis:

Danny McBride (Eastbound & Down, Vice Principals) returns to HBO with The Righteous Gemstones. This comedy series tells the story of a world-famous televangelist family with a long tradition of deviance, greed and charitable work. McBride will star as main character Jesse Gemstone, who sees himself as a maverick in the ministry game, taking what his father, Eli Gemstone, has built and expanded it for a more modern audience. In addition to playing Jesse, McBride serves as executive producer, creator, writer, and director.

THE RIGHTEOUS GEMSTONES airs on HBO starting August 18.
