Danny McBride brings the faith in trailer for HBO’s The Righteous Gemstones

If you've been a fan of Eastbound & Down and Vice Principals, then chances are pretty damn good that you'll be down for The Righteous Gemstones as well. The upcoming HBO comedy series tells the story of the renowned Gemstone family, world-famous televangelists with a long tradition of deviance, greed, and charitable work. HBO has released a new trailer for The Righteous Gemstones, which is shaping up to be something quite hilarious.

In addition to creating, writing, directing, and executive producing The Righteous Gemstones, Danny McBride also stars as Jesse, the eldest son of Eli Gemstone (John Goodman), who looks to lead in his father’s footsteps, but finds that his past sins are jeopardizing the family ministry. Adam Devine plays Kelvin, Jesse's younger brother and a persistent thorn in his side, with Edi Patterson playing Jesse's sister, Judy, who is secretly living with her fiancé and dreams of escaping the Gemstone compound. You've also got the great Walton Goggins as Baby Billy, a former child star who clogged and sang for Jesus. As an aging man, he has fallen on hard times and comes to the Gemstones for salvation. Despite the subject matter of the series, Danny McBride told Entertainment Weekly that he isn't looking to take down anyone's beliefs.

The goal of it is not to be a takedown of anything. It’s setting a story in a world that I haven’t seen. When Hollywood decides to take on religion, I think they make the deadly mistake of lampooning people for their beliefs, which is not something I’m interested in doing. I would not go and pass judgement on other people. For us it’s about lampooning a hypocrite, lampooning somebody who presents themselves one way and is not that way.

Instead, McBride says that he's more interested in taking down people who don't practice what they preach. "I don’t think that’s something that is just relevant to the world of religion and televangelism," McBride said. "I think that’s just relevant to the world we live in. We’re constantly being exposed to people who present themselves one way on social media but act another way in person."

The Righteous Gemstones will debut on HBO on August 18, 2019.
