Just one day after it was confirmed that OCEAN'S 8 alumna Awkwafina is in talks to join the cast of Sony Pictures' sequel to 2017's JUMANJI: WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE, Variety has learned that DEATH TO SMOOCHY and IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA actor Danny DeVito will also be braving the many dangers of the supernatural board game sequel. Upon signing onto the highly-anticipated follow-up, DeVito has positioned himself to join returning cast members Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan. Jake Kasdan, who helmed JUMANJI: WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE, will once again be at the helm.
In talking about DeVito signing onto the family-friendly action adventure comedy sequel, Johnson told Variety, “The magic of ‘Jumanji’ is who becomes who. And the idea of Danny DeVito joining our cast was too irresistible and something we knew we wanted to deliver to our audience this upcoming Christmas. Dwanta Claus loves everyone.”
No details about DeVito's character have been revealed at this time, though with Kasdan, Scott Rosenberg, and Jeff Pinkner penning the script, there's no telling what manner of mischief the TAXI alum will be getting up to. I'll say this much, with the recent addition of Awkwafina, and now DeVito, this Jumanji sequel looks to be going hard in the paint when it comes to comedy. Here's hoping that lightning strikes twice for Kasdan and his team and they delve deeper into this adventuresome (and lucrative) franchise.
The sequel to JUMANJI: WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE is scheduled to invade theaters on December 13, 2019.
