It's been a good six months or so since we've heard any rumblings on the 28 MONTHS LATER front, yet while out promoting his new film STEVE JOBS, director Danny Boyle couldn't suck the subject. Graciously, he indugles us a bit. Peep it…
While speaking with The Playlist, here's what Boyle said about directing a potential third chapter in the revitalizing zombie franchise:
“I've got no problem [with that]. It’s the usual thing: is it's not about whether people think it's a good idea that you're directing. It’s whether you respond to the script or not. It’s just like on [‘Steve Jobs’]. I got the script and I went, 'That was amazing. I hope I can add to that somehow and it be even better than just the experience of reading it.' "
Per the scipt in question, original screenwriter Alex Garland, who as already penned a concept for 28 MONTHS, added this:
“It's not quite ready to go, but, there's been a bit of work done on that,” he said. “It's in a process at the moment and I wouldn't have any inhibition about being involved in it at all. It's amazing what has happened to the zombie genre since we made it. There’s 'Walking Dead.' I saw this very funny trailer the other day for the 'Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse.' A very funny trailer. It appears to be everywhere.”
So there you have it. Seems that 28 MONTHS LATER isn't quite dead, but rather in a nascent stage at this point. Let's hope that, after EX MACHINA, Garland decides to go back to the well for buddy Boyle instead of making films on his own. Or hell, here's an idea, let Garland direct his own viral-zombie script. Dude's proven he's got the chops.
