Fans of Danny Boyle’s fantastic 28 DAYS LATER and its excellent sequel 28 WEEKS LATER have long held on to hope that we’d be seeing a continuation of the story presented in those films, but over the past couple of years the chances of seeing another entry in the franchise has grown increasingly dim. Last fall 28 DAYS LATER scribe Alex Garland crushed a lot of rumors surrounding the supposed 28 MONTHS LATER project, stating…
…in regards to another movie, no – there are no plans for a 28 Months Later or whatever they were calling it. This is a series I’ve always been heavily involved with between the original and the sequel so if there were plans for another movie, I would absolutely know about it.”
Now Danny Boyle has spoken out about the potential to see another film in the series while speaking with Wired Magazine about his latest film TRANCE. In the interview Boyle states that he has never really been a fan of zombie movies at all.
I don’t like zombie movies. I never did. We took a genre and fucked with it. Zombie aficionados, they’re quite precious with all their rules. Like with running: ‘They don’t do that!’ Of course there are so many manifestations of zombies now, the rule book has gone out the window.”
When asked about returning to the world he created with 28 DAYS LATER and its sequel, Boyle responded…
Given what we’ve just been talking about, it’s very difficult to know whether zombies are overexposed now as a concept. So it’s 40/60 whether it happens or not. But we did have an idea of where to set it and what it might be about.”
Well, a 40/60 chance is better than Boyle simply stating that 28 MONTHS LATER won’t happen at all. We shouldn’t get our hopes up, but at least the idea is still being tossed around.
When asked if he could share some of the ideas of what a third entry may entail, Boyle jokingly responded…
No, because they’ll end up in “The Walking Dead.” “
At least the guy has a sense of humor about it.
