In the three Bond films that Daniel Craig has starred in the character has been through the ringer and then some. His Bond has been a much more brooding and violent one than we’ve seen before, which is typically attributed to the “times we live in.” That said, Craig’s Bond is certainly not without the charm and wit of his predecessors, but with such dark and tragic territory his character has been through thus far in his tenure, there hasn’t been much room for the lighter side of Bond. Speaking to Vulture while promoting his current play, Betrayal, Craig said he’d like to see a return to the Bond of old in the next outing.
“Hopefully we’ll reclaim some of the old irony and make sure it doesn’t become pastiche. I can’t do shtick, I’m not very good at it. Unless it kind of suddenly makes sense. Does that make sense? I sometimes wish I hammed it up more, but I just can’t do it very well, so I don’t do it.”
SKYFALL certainly left Bond with a bit of a clean slate to move forward with and it would be cool to see the character move into more adventurous territory now that the origin journey is complete. Personally, I love Craig’s work in the franchise and enjoy at least two of his Bond films immensely, so it will be nice to see him return to form with director Sam Mendes. However, I tend to agree with his above statement, which is basically his desire not to get stale on the same themes of the previous films. We’re still a long way off from the next entry, but it’s good to know those thoughts are swirling now.
The next Bond adventure is planned for sometime in 2015, along with every other major franchise in existence.
