When most of us think of Agents and THE MATRIX franchise, we undoubtedly think of Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving), the maniacal program who kept order within the Matrix until he was destroyed by Neo (Keanu Reeve) and resurrected as a renegade program, but there were plenty of other Agents in the franchise.
Daniel Bernhardt is slated to reprise his role of Agent Johnson for THE MATRIX 4. The actor and stuntman appeared in THE MATRIX RELOADED playing the leader of the newly upgraded agents and was involved in a brief battle with Neo near the beginning of the film. Agent Johnson was later seen in pursuit of Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne), Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss), and The Keymaker (Randall Duk Kim) on the freeway and engaged in a memorable fight with Morpheus on the top of a speeding semi. In addition to Daniel Bernhardt, THE MATRIX 4 will also feature the return of Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Jada Pinkett Smith, as well as franchise newcomers Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, Priyanka Chopra, Neil Patrick Harris, and more.
It will be interesting to see what role the Agents will play in this new MATRIX film, but we do know that we can count Agent Smith out as Hugo Weaving has stated that he won't be back. Weaving had originally agreed to return and had even read the script as he prepared himself for close to four months of filming, but as he was also scheduled to work at the National Theatre in London, Lana Wachowski decided that the dates wouldn't line up. "So, she pulled the plug on the negotiations," Weaving said. "That’s where it ended up. She basically didn’t feel that my commitment to the National Theatre was going to fit in with the dates that she had in mind for me." Production on THE MATRIX 4 recently resumed after being shut down due to COVID-19, with the film slated to hit theaters on April 1, 2022.
