Dan Aykroyd comments on the new Ghostbusters cast

That loud groan you heard yesterday was likely coming from a lot of people reading that Sony Pictures and Paul Feig had officially announced the cast for the new GHOSTBUSTERS movie. Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones are the new team of proton-pack wielding heroes. Looking at this news sensibly, one might decide to give the movie a chance or decide to forget about it and not purchase a movie ticket. Isn't freedom great?

One high-profile GHOSBUSTER who isn’t taking his ball and going home is Dan Aykroyd, the franchise leader in a sense who has been trying to get a sequel off the ground for more years than I can remember. The actor was contacted by The Hollywood Reporter for a reaction and he didn’t disappoint:

The Aykroyd family is delighted by this inheritance of the Ghostbusters torch by these most magnificent women in comedy. My great grandfather, Dr. Sam Aykroyd, the original Ghostbuster, was a man who empowered women in his day and this is a beautiful development in the legacy of our family business.

Aykroyd’s great grandfather Sam was actually involved with paranormal investigation which probably helped with Aykroy’d decent into that field. Seriously, he’s all about ghosts, mediums and UFO’s. So as much as fans of the classic GHOSBUSTERS movie (that's right, singular) love to cherish and give the finger to change, perhaps knowing that the man who has invested much of his life into seeing the franchise continue has given his blessing will deter some of the hate.

The GHOSTBUSTERS reboot hits theaters on July 22, 2016.
