Dakota Johnson has entered talks to play the title character Madame Web in one of Sony’s many planned Spider-Man spinoffs at the studio, per “The Hollywood Reporter.”
Madame Web first appeared in the 1980s in “The Amazing Spider-Man” No. 210 and she is a clairvoyant mutant who specializes in predicting the future. She is typically depicted as being a blind, paralyzed old woman that is surrounded by a web-like machine that is necessary to keep her alive. For a number of years, Sandra Bullock was rumored to be in the running for this role but she debunked that rumor late last year.
S.J. Clarkson is set to direct the film from a script by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, who also are behind another Spider-Man spinoff, Morbius. This project joins that aforementioned film and a Kraven The Hunter movie that was previously announced as Sony continues to expand their Spider-Man universe.
This brings Dakota Johnson back to big franchise films following her tenure with the Fifty Shades of Grey series. Johnson has been focusing on smaller projects and recently made waves at the Sundance Film Festival with roles in Am I Ok? and Cha Cha Real Smooth, both of which she also produced under her YeaTime banner.
