With the release of STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER mere months away, fans across the world will witness the fate of major characters and (hopefully) discover the answers to questions which have been hanging over our hands since THE FORCE AWAKENS. One aspect of the Sequel Trilogy which has captured the imagination of fans is the relationship between Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and Rey (Daisy Ridley), and you don't have to dive very deep to uncover a mountain of fan content which puts the two characters into a romantic relationship.
While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Daisy Ridley confirmed that she's aware that certain fans are quite passionate about the whole "Reylo" phenomenon. "It does not bother me, people writing theories," Ridley said. "It’s really fun hearing them. Plus, because I know what’s sort of going to happen, I think it’ll be really interesting to see people’s reaction to [the final film]. Obviously, there’s this whole Reylo thing and some people are very passionate about it, some aren’t." With the Sequel Trilogy coming to an end, Ridley went on to hint that the potential romantic relationship between Rey and Kylo Ren hasn't been ignored by THE RISE OF SKYWALKER director J.J. Abrams.
J.J. does deal with [it]. It’s a very complex issue. People talk about toxic relationships and whatever it is. It’s no joke and I think it’s dealt with really well because it’s not skimmed over.
Personally, I've never been a fan of the possibility of Rey and Kylo Ren getting together in any romantic sort of way, but I can appreciate that some fans have very strong feelings about it. THE RISE OF SKYWALKER co-writer Chris Terrio has also teased that the bond between the two characters will be explored more in the upcoming film. "Some of the most interesting scenes in The Last Jedi are the conversations between Rey and Ren," Terrio said. "We’ve tried to pick up that complicated relationship that really has been present ever since the interrogation in Episode VII. When Ren takes off his mask, there’s a nakedness about him with Rey that he doesn’t express to anyone else. Rian developed that in fascinating ways and we’ve been able to develop it even further." STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER will hit theaters on December 20, 2019.
