Daisy Ridley on Rey’s parents and her future with the Star Wars franchise

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS wound up presenting several mysteries for fans, including just who Rey's (Daisy Ridley) absent parents are/were. There are certainly plenty of theories out there, ranging from Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and even Emperor Palpatine, but STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI director Rian Johnson has said that the answer will finally arrive in the upcoming sequel. Rolling Stone recently revealed a great profile on STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI, and it seems that the answer to the question of Rey's parentage fell to J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson.

Daisy Ridley was told by J.J. Abrams who Rey's parents were on the set of THE FORCE AWAKENS, and the actress believed that nothing ever changed once Rian Johnson took over. "I thought what I was told in the beginning is what it is," Ridley said. Which the Rolling Stone notes as odd, because Johnson insists that he was given total creative control to come up with the answer to that question himself. "I wasn't given any directive as to what that had to be," Johnson said. "I was never given the information that she is this or she is that." It would seem that both directors came up with the same answer independently, or perhaps not, as J.J. Abrams "cryptically" hinted that he and Johnson had more coordination than Johnson has let on. Damn you, mystery box!

With J.J. Abrams returning to direct STAR WARS: EPISODE IX, the final installment of sequel trilogy will bring the Skywalker story to an end, or at least, that's the way Abrams sees it, although he does admit that "the future is in flux." The future of STAR WARS post-EPISODE IX will likely revolve around Rian Johnson's mysterious new STAR WARS trilogy, but what about Daisy Ridley's involvement in the franchise? Is it possible that Rey could continue on?

"No," she says flatly. "For me, I didn't really know what I was signing on to. I hadn't read the script, but from what I could tell, it was really nice people involved, so I was just like, 'Awesome.' Now I think I am even luckier than I knew then, to be part of something that feels so like coming home now." But, um, doesn't that sort of sound like a yes? "No," she says again, smiling a little. "No, no, no. I am really, really excited to do the third thing and round it out, because ultimately, what I was signing on to was three films. So in my head, it's three films. I think it will feel like the right time to round it out."

Assuming the STAR WARS franchise is still trucking along in thirty years, and, let's be honest, it probably will be, would Daisy Ridley considering returning for STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS 2.0 much like her predecessors did? "Who knows?" Ridley said. "I honestly feel like the world may end in the next 30 years, so, if in 30 years we are not living underground in a series of interconnected cells … then sure. Maybe. But again, it's like, who knows. Because the thing I thought was so amazing, was people really wanted it. And it was done by people who really love it." Best to keep those Jedi skills sharp just in case.
