Ah, the legacy of Shakespeare. Even when comic books and erotic teen novels are all the rage nothing beats the elegance, drama and wit of an adaptation of one of The Bard's classic works. But even an eternal piece of art can be seen from different angles, and in the case of the masterpiece HAMLET we will see a much different version in the form of OPHELIA, which just dropped its first image of star Daisy Ridley
Take a look at the fanciness and all that hair:
Here is a synopsis for the movie:
Set in the 14th Century but spoken in a contemporary voice, Ophelia is a dynamic re-imagining of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Ophelia (Ridley) takes center stage as the Queen’s (Naomi Watts) most trusted lady-in-waiting. Beautiful and intelligent, she soon captures the attention of the handsome Prince Hamlet and a forbidden love blossoms. As war brews, lust and betrayal are tearing Elsinore Castle apart from within and Ophelia must decide between her true love or her own life in order to protect a very dangerous secret.
The movie also stars a bevy of English talent, including Clive Owen as Claudius, George MacKay as Hamlet, Tom Felton as Laertes, and Devon Terrell as Horatio, with the movie being directed by Claire McCarthy.
Obviously Shakespeare is terrific without a modern update, but it doesn’t hurt to take the classic characters and do something else with them. At least this way people may get a bit of surprise when they go to the theater, as opposed to knowing the story inch by inch. Ridley is really branching out after STAR WARS made her a household name, refusing to pigeonhole herself into one role. There’s no better way to showcase your range than by taking on The Bard, so godspeed to her. If all else fails, she may impale the queen with a lightsaber to earn some points. Shakespeare!
Expect OPHELIA to his theaters in 2018.
