Joel Schumacher's 1987 classic THE LOST BOYS was one of those movies that my parents "sort-of" let me watch. The dangerous mad dash on speeder bikes across the beach? Fine. Watching Kiefer Sutherland's David offer Jason Patric's Michael maggots and worms? Acceptable. Weird sweaty dude blaring a saxophone while half naked? Creepy but OK for consumption. However, when it came to the scene where David and his vampire boys completely ravage a group of campers, somehow my parents always fast-forwarded during that part. Regardless, Schumacher's movie remains a classic that's truly stood the test of time.
Two awful sequels – LOST BOYS: THE TRIBE and LOST BOYS: THE THIRST – hit the bargain DVD bin about two decades later, seemingly killing the "franchise." However, many believed a new iteration of the famous vampire flick might be better served in long form. CW was one of those believers and last year, ordered a pilot directed by TWILIGHT vet Catherine Hardwicke. However, the channel eventually passed on the project placing The Lost Boys television series back in the coffin.
However, much like Count Dracula himself, The Lost Boys series has risen from the dead, once again gaining the interest of the CW. The CW has ordered a new pilot for The Lost Boys, with a significantly revamped and re-worked script. The new script comes courtesy of writer Heather Mitchell (who co-wrote the original pilot) and Rob Thomas. Thomas has been a frequent collaborator with the CW. His popular show iZombie just ended and he also helped create Veronica Mars. Not a bad track record. The new pilot will also feature a completely new cast.
I can't say I'm surprised that CW decided to give The Lost Boys a second chance. It's not like they are the first channel to pass on a television show and then change their minds. CBS notoriously did that with The Big Bang Theory. In addition, the CW's had quite the successful run when it comes to vampire television shows. The Vampire Diaries, The Originals, and Legacies are all highly successful vampire tales on the programmer. Whether or not The Lost Boys follows suit remains to be seen.
So what do you guys say? Are you excited at the prospect of a Lost Boys television show? Would you rather it be on a different channel? Who would you cast as some of the leads? Let us know in the comments below!
