Fans of QUARANTINE and DEVIL will be familiar with writer/director John Dowdle, who is bringing his latest found footage horror/thriller to the big screen in AS ABOVE, SO BELOW. The new pic features a cast of unknowns who travel into the depths of the catacombs beneath the streets of Paris looking for "a critical missing piece" of history. The expedition goes awry when the team is trapped inside and start to experience strange and frightening phenomena.
Take a look:
Here's the synopsis:
Miles of twisting catacombs lie beneath the streets of Paris, the eternal home to countless souls. When a team of explorers ventures into the uncharted maze of bones, they uncover the secret of what this city of the dead was meant to contain. A journey into madness and terror, As Above, So Below reaches deep into the human psyche to reveal the personal demons that come back to haunt us all.
I'm not really a huge proponent of found footage flicks, but I'm not against them either. This looks like a pretty cool variation on the genre, though, and I like the elements of the "hell on earth" theme going on here. The clausterphobic aspect is nice, too, as it creates an immediate air of tension. Being trapped in a cave (or catacomb) in the dark with no real means of finding your way out is scary enough. Then you bring in hell? Shiiiiit.
AS ABOVE, SO BELOW crawls into theaters on August 15, 2014.
