Movies like THE SHALLOWS, 47 METERS DOWN, and last year’s THE MEG have been getting people to the theaters the last few summers so they can witness some shark-munching terror, but this year things are getting switched up. Getting rid of the shark and bringing another aquatic predator, an alligator, to feast on unsuspecting humans, CRAWL is hoping to be this year’s creature-horror hit, and the first wave of critics have officially experienced the terror first-hand. Does this croc-feature have what it takes to keep audiences on the edge of their seat?
According to the first batch of critics, including our own Eric Walkuski, the new movie from Alexandre Aja (THE HILLS HAVE EYES) and starring Kaya Scodelario and Barry Pepper is a nail-biting, adrenaline pumping, vicious little movie that takes its simple premise (people trapped in a house with a croc during a hurricane) gets a much mileage out of it as possible. Critics agree it’s the perfect summer movie to wash away the blockbuster fatigue, with Walkuski saying there’s “no filler, no muss, no fuss,” across the “90 or so minutes filled with tension and jolts.”

#Crawl is a genuine delight. Short, no filler, no muss, no fuss. 90 or so minutes filled with tension and jolts. See it with a crowd. @TheCrawlMovie #CrawlMovie

#CrawlMovie owns. One of the most intense motherfuckers of a theatrical experience I've ever had – I screamed, I swore, I tried to bite through my acrylic nails. Hell of a return to form for Alexandre Aja; as relentless and gnarly as his greats. Cannot wait to watch it again.

#CrawlMovie is a batshit, wild summer thrill! I'm a pretty quiet movie watcher but that went out the window here. Forget "edge of your seat" – had to stop myself from jumping out of it a few times. See this one on the big screen with a packed house.

#CrawlMovie is my kind of movie. Efficient, scary, funny, (okay, okay, kinda dumb), and with an exhilarating sense of cosmic hopelessness, where everything that could possibly go wrong does, which makes for a really good time in the theater. Definitely a film to see with a crowd. pic.twitter.com/Z8JldIfZ4q

Man, #CrawlMovie had my heart pumping the entire time. Hurricanes are terrifying by itself, but throw in gators and a doggo in peril and the adrenalin rush is real. Agh. Suger! My heart! Mahhhh hearttttt!

#CrawlMovie is an absolute blast. Taut, ferocious filmmaking. I’ve never seen a concept so simple executed with such bravado and precision. pic.twitter.com/6TxFhtW8jJ

#CrawlMovie is a fast, vicious, and nasty summer thrill ride. It plays a tight, effective game; and it's the sort of movie that the warmer months used to deliver between blockbusters. Hot damn was it fun, and I'm ready to see it again. Oh, and see it with an audience. Worth it. pic.twitter.com/7lWuDfqWEr

Secret’s out: #CrawlMovie is the horror movie of the summer, an ingeniously realized creature feature classic full of @AlexandreAja’s patented combination of white knuckle suspense set pieces and gnarly gore. It delivers big time. ???? pic.twitter.com/0ca65WSx5i

Just saw @TheCrawlMovie and it was a total blast. Also, if I never step foot in Florida again, I am completely okay with that. Gators are scary, y’all. #CrawlMovie
