COYOTE UGLY celebrated twenty years back in August and with its anniversary, came talks about a sequel to the hit 2000 film. Tyra Banks, who played Zoe in the film, seemed to be spearheading getting a sequel made but a lot of it was just tossing ideas around with the primary cast. Well, as it turns out, Banks has had several more meetings about the future of COYOTE UGLY and it seems like everyone is game for wherever it's headed but there is some legal wrangling to work out.

Tyra Banks spoke with "Entertainment Tonight" and the possibility of refreshing the movie for a new audience is definitely in the books and everyone seems to be on board:

"We are trying, trying, trying to make this happen. We are so trying. Maria Bello, Diane Warren did the music, LeAnn Rimes, everybody is in! Piper Perabo, Bridget Moynahan, they're all like, 'Ok, let's do this."

So, what's getting in the way? COYOTE UGLY was released by Touchstone Pictures, which was a part of Disney that released their not so kid-friendly titles. Touchstone Pictures is now no more so Disney owns all the rights and now it becomes an issue of going through all of the technical things to get the project off the ground and into the right hands:

"It's more technical mumbo jumbo. We have story ideas. We have our original producer, Mr. Jerry Bruckhemier, he's down. It's like 'Come on, let's get this going! it's logistics. It's legistics. But we're ready."

As for what those story ideas are, Banks said she recently had a meeting about what it could be and they're mulling over a lot of ideas which could include a sequel, reboot, or even a TV series:

"Literally had a meeting recently and we are trying. We're like, 'is it a movie? Is it a series? Is it our kids? Are our old a**es dancing on the bar still?"

When Banks was asked would prefer a movie or film she said "Maybe start with a movie and then move to a series." In all honesty, I'm not saying we need this by any means but if it was done right, I could see a TV series centered around these ladies running a bar being very successful. Also, given that studios and networks love resurrecting old properties, a new version of COYOTE UGLY isn't that far-fetched if they can figure out the rights issues.

COYOTE UGLY was based around the famed bar of the same name but most of its story centers on Violet Sanford (Piper Perabo) who makes her way to New York City to pursue her career in the music business. Her aspirations become a bit sidelined due to her notoriety at her job at Coyote Ugly, a gig she got in order to pay her rent and get proper music equipment to launch her songwriting career. The film also stars Maria Bello, Bridget Moynahan, Izabella Miko, John Goodman, and Adam Garcia.

Critics were not into the bar antics at COYOTE UGLY, gracing the film with a very rotten score of 23% on Rotten Tomatoes. That didn't stop moviegoers from embracing it as it went on to gross $113.9 million on a $45 million budget$60.7 million of that came from the domestic box office and the film has since gone on to have a bigger life after being discovered by new fans over the years on DVD, Blu-ray. and TV airings. The film's soundtrack even took advantage of the era when people actually still bought soundtrack albums and became a success in its own right. Thanks to the gold-selling single "Can't Fight the Moonlight" by LeAnn Rimes and a slew of other throwback jams from the '70s, '80s, and '90s, the soundtrack has gone to sell over 4 million copies.
