Netflix is about to get all up in your jazz with a Cowboy Bebop teaser trailer. If you like your live-action adaptations with attitude and style, this groovy look at the upcoming series is sure to bring you to the dancefloor. As many fans across social media have pointed out, the Cowboy Bebop teaser trailer has an Edgar Wright flare to it and will give you some Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World vibes. For a creative twist, the characters use the trailer to their advantage in battle by pushing and pulling the frames of the footage itself. Spike even uses the trailer environment as a bo staff at one point in the promo. I expect to see more of this creativity in the show and hope this isn’t a one-off idea.
Cowboy Bebop is based on the popular 1998 Japanese anime TV series from writer Cain Kuga. The show was first ordered by Netflix straight-to-series for 10 episodes back in 2018 but filming hit a snag when John Cho, who plays Spike Spiegel, seriously injured his knee during a “freak accident” on set. The injury postponed production for 7-9 months.
Also starring Mustafa Shakir and Daniella Pineda, the series follows three bounty hunters, aka “cowboys”, that are all trying to outrun the past. Per the official synopsis, “They form a scrappy, snarky crew ready to hunt down the solar system’s most dangerous criminals — for the right price. But they can only kick and quip their way out of so many scuffles before their pasts finally catch up with them.”
I’m ashamed to admit this, but I’ve never seen the Cowboy Bebop anime series. I know. I’m disappointed in myself as well. It’s a major animation blind spot for me that I plan to correct when the animated series comes to Netflix on October 21. The animated version is directed by Shinichirō Watanabe, with screenwriter Keiko Nobumoto, character designer Toshihiro Kawamoto, mechanical designer Kimitoshi Yamane, and composer Yoko Kanno. For fans of the animated series, you should know that the original voice actors are returning to Cowboy Bebop to provide a Japanese language dub for the live-action series. Talk about authenticity!
