Over the years we’ve heard rumors of a new SPAWN film pop up from time to time. SPAWN creator Todd McFarlane has teased how his new vision of the character would be closer in tone to ALIEN and JAWS, which is a bit of a head-scratcher for those familiar with the comics but should prove to be an interesting concept if the film can get off the ground.
Speaking to MTV News, McFarlane has updated the progress of the film, hinting that an Oscar-winning actor has shown interest in being involved with the new film.
I continue writing pages here and there. I have a guy waiting in the sidelines, an Academy Award-winning actor. Every three weeks he’s on the phone going, ‘Todd, where’s the script? Todd, where’s the script?’ I can’t say who it is. You could [narrow it down]. He came out to the office. He gave me his pitch, and I gave him mine. The pitch I gave was that we could do ten of these for the next ten years and he wouldn’t have to be 22 for the rest of his life.”
So who could this mysterious Oscar-winning actor be? Let the guessing game begin.
On top of a live-action SPAWN reboot, McFarlane says that another animated series based on the character is in the works:
We have 90 minutes all set and ready to go, other than sending it to an animation house. We’ve done all the voice recordings, we’ve done all the backgrounds, so the technology is way better than it was a decade ago; there are some spectacular things we can do now that we weren’t able to when we were on HBO.”
If you’re unfamiliar with SPAWN (and shame on you if so!), here’s a synopsis of who/what he is:
Al Simmons, a CIA agent, was killed by his own boss, Jason Wynn, after witnessing his boss’ “indiscretions”. Simmons was sent to hell, where in a desperate attempt to see his wife one last time, he made a deal with the devil Malebolgia, and unwittingly, to become a “Hellspawn”, a General in Hells Army. Spawn has tried to retain his own humanity while finding a way out of Malebolgia’s control and battling a variety of enemies, both supernatural and criminal.
McFarlane seems hellbent on getting a new SPAWN film out for the masses and I hope things fall into place for the flick. SPAWN is certainly an intriguing enough character to ‘spawn’ a franchise.
