As we all know by now, STEPHEN KING'S IT is a f*cking massive book and the film we got this past September is only Part I of II. And this was always the plan the producers have said.
But since then there has been a rumor floating about that the second film in the series IT: CHAPTER 2 will be split in two (ala THE HOBBIT) making for an epic horror movie trilogy.
And while an IT Trilogy makes more than a bit of sense to us as the first film is gathering up more cash than a James Cameron directed STAR WARS film (not really, but relatively close) so we could totally see Warner Bros. and New Line trying to stretch their new hit franchise out for as long as possible.
BUT…
In a recent interview with Variety, director Andres Muschietti was if there were – plans to split the two films into three – creating an IT: CHAPTER 3 – and he all but shut the rumor down as quickly as possible.
Andres Muschietti on IT Trilogy:
I don’t think so. I’ve read that idea in the media, which is funny. I understand why they would think that because New Line originally split up “The Hobbit” into three [movies] instead of two. It would make sense because it would give me more turf to develop the characters and more of a canvas to develop the journey, but to be honest, there wasn’t a conversation about that and now we are designing the story as one single film.
I for one wouldn't be surprised if in the end the final film was split down the middle. After all, the novel has more than enough material to spread out over 2 more films and, like Muschietti says above, it would give him more time to flesh out the characters and the story.
Here's hoping that we eventually do get an IT: CHAPTER 3, but until the day it is announced (fingers crossed) I guess we'll just have to make due with IT: CHAPTER 2. Which is fine by me… for now.
