This isn’t quite rumor so much as deeply wishful thinking on the part of the producer, but that being said: in a feature Empire Magazine recently ran on THE BOURNE LEGACY, producer Frank Marshall said “You see there are several different programmes in the movie with different skill sets. All possibilities are open. My dream is that in the next one we see Matt and Jeremy team up.”
Regardless of whether they eventually team up – and Damon doesn’t have a high opinion of writer/director Tony Gilroy so I’m not sure how that would go over – what I’m actually more curious about is his description of “different skill sets” and seeing how that will manifest when we finally see THE BOURNE LEGACY. To my untrained eye there was little in the trailer to differentiate Cross’ combat and survival skills from Bourne’s, but I could very well be wrong. Would anybody out there be able to enlighten me?
Don’t forget that THE BOURNE LEGACY was just bumped back a week to August 10th.
Gilroy also had this to say about how he got involved and what makes Cross different than Bourne: “I had never spent one moment thinking about how to do a sequel to Bourne Ultimatum. I first came in for two weeks just to spitball. I had a very random idea…so we started with that and it got more and more exciting. All of a sudden I was staring at something that had a great deal of resonance and was soulful and uncynical and was also gonna kick ass. So that was good… [Cross is] coming from a completely different background to Jason [Bourne]. He knows exactly who he is; he signed up to this…He wants to be part of a team. I can tell you he was in the military then he joined the programme. He’s a person who wants to be part of something… to have a sense of purpose. But then it’s taken away.”
