Refn has long wanted to make a WONDER WOMAN movie and, in this interview from 2010, explained the reason he took the job directing DRIVE, the upcoming Ryan Gosling thriller, is that he wanted to prove to Warner Bros. he was up to the job.
For what it’s worth, Refn seems to closer to a WONDER WOMAN movie now than he was back before DRIVE but that’s hardly his fault. There is no project in development at Warner Bros. and the property is in a bit of a holding pattern after the David E. Kelley pilot for NBC wasn’t picked up for the fall season.
But Refn said this weekend on the DRIVE red carpet that if he ever gets his dream to make a WONDER WOMAN movie, there’s no doubt about it – Christina Hendricks is his star. For her part, Hendricks told Rachael Ray last year, “I’ve been wanting to wear that outfit my whole life!” so I’m assuming she’d be game as well.
Before getting him on board a WONDER WOMAN project, Warner Bros. currently has Refn developing a remake of LOGAN’S RUN and if that goes well, who knows what could be next? But at that point Hendricks will be pushing 40 and will WB want a younger actress? Who would you want to play the part?
