When you combine the global box-office take of James Wan's CONJURING movies as well as ANNABELLE, its first spinoff, you come very close to nearly $900 million. That figure is made all the more impressive when when you realize that the combined budget of all three movies was merely $66 million, suddenly, Warner Bros.' interest in cranking out more spinoff's is very understandable. A sequel to ANNABELLE is already on the way and last year it was announced that another spinoff was being developed which would center on the demonic Nun who menaced Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson in THE CONJURING 2.
Deadline reports that Corin Hardy has been tasked with helming THE CONJURING spinoff. Hardy had been attached to direct the remake of THE CROW for several years, but when the project moved on from Relativity Studios, it was unclear if Corin Hardy and star Jason Momoa would stick with it. THE NUN will be scripted by Gary Dauberman and James Wan, the latter of whom will also produce along with Peter Safran. I'm a big fan of THE CONJURING and its sequel, but ANNABELLE didn't do much for me. Hopefully THE NUN will be able to deliver some worthwhile scares with Hardy at the helm.
ANNABELLE 2, the next CONJURING spinoff on the slate, will center on a doll-maker and his wife as they decide to open their home to a nun and several girls from an orphanage that has been closed. The doll-maker's possessed creation, Annabelle, soon sets her sights on the children. The sequel will hit theaters on August 11, 2017.
