Corey Feldman talks honestly about Goonies sequel

The Goonies may never say die, but they may not have a choice. Despite the fact many, many fans of the original children’s classic want a sequel, there’s a good chance their dreams of finding more of One-Eyed Willy’s treasure will be locked away forever. This is all coming from the mouth of Mouth himself, Corey Feldman.

In an exclusive interview with MovieWeb, Feldman dished on the blunt reality that a sequel to the 1985 film probably won’t happen. However, the reason why is more sad than logical:

Richard Donner is 87 years old. And it's like, no one really wants to make it without him. He's the driving force behind it. He says it's still alive. But as we all know…When you get to that age, things slow down quite a bit. There is a big possibility that he might not want to keep driving it. So, I think without him, it doesn't happen. And every day that passes, that he doesn't do it, there is less and less chance that it is ever going to happen at all.

Donner and the original cast have been wanting to do a sequel for, well, years, but there never seems to be a firm grasp on the concept. One minute everyone seems on board, the next they have no script or story. Then it seems it’s a guarantee, then we learn they don't have their shit together.

But if this is the end-all reason we don’t get a GOONIES sequel, then so be it. No one should demand that the legend Richard Donner force himself to continue trying to make a decent-but-not-great 80’s sequel flick. Also, I don’t think anyone wants some random director to come on board to take the reins. Sort of ruins the whole nostalgia angle.

To be honest, I am one of the few people who doesn’t want to see The Goonies back in action. Sure, the original is kind of fun in that I-saw-it-when-I-was-a-kid-and-now-it’s-stuck-in-the-caverns-of-my-mind sort of way. But I don’t know if you’ve been following the careers of most the original cast, but I don’t think they’ll have the same cute effect they did over 30 years ago. Feldman’s cheeks just don’t seem as pinch-able, and I think Chunk (Jeff Cohen) is thin and bald now. That’s not the Chunk I know and love! Maybe it’s time we let The Goonies say die in peace, and may they rest in the eternal glory of 80s child star fame.
