The Oscar nominations were announced yesterday and I don’t think anyone was holding their breath for the top-grossing film of 2012, THE AVENGERS, to get a nod for best picture. It was my favorite film of the year in terms of shear entertainment, but there was never any feeling that it would be an awards sweeper. And, it doesn’t need to be, really. The proof is in the pudding. However, ILM (Industrial Light and Magic), the VFX team behind THE AVENGERS, put together a really sweet sizzle reel that shows just how much visual effects work went into the film.
I was quite surprised at how much was done for New York, as they literally built a massive portion of the city and it’s seamless. I never once thought it was an effect while watching it. The rest of the work in THE AVENGERS was top notch and it really felt like they put some time, money, and energy into the whole show. In essence, I think a VFX win for THE AVENGERS is much deserved, due largely to the fact that without them being as outstanding as they are there’s no way in hell the movie would’ve been as successful as it was.
Kudos to ILM:
THE AVENGERS is currently on blu-ray/DVD, with THE AVENGERS 2 slated to hit on May 1, 2015.
