Cool Videos: Check out the awesome CGI short Mutant Land from maestro Phil Tippett

Phil Tippett began as a stop-motion (or “go-motion” as he helped create) animator and evolved into a CGI artist, able to blend both the real and “unreal” in some unbelievably awesome ways.  Tippett has worked on a number of high-profile films, from ROBOCOP, JURASSIC PARK, and DRAGONHEART, amongst others.  He’s remained persistent in funding his own projects, especially his MAD GOD film, but has worked consistently on a number of features and animation projects, including this seriously cool CGI short, Mutant Land.

“As the sun goes down in the dark and terrifying place that is Mutant Land, the creatures roaming this world are on the ultimate search for food,” reads the synopsis, and the story follows suit.  It’s a very cool little short, much like a videogame animatic and it makes me wish for a feature-length animated film that pander’s to adults rather than children.

“I’ve been interested for a number of years in doing a full-length computer graphics feature,” says Tippett, “but not necessarily in the style of Pixar or Dreamworks. So I came up with an outline and started fleshing out something I thought was produce-able and more like the kind of thing I wanted to see. It was something for the Pixar kids once they turn teenagers.”

Tippett’s older work can be revisited onscreen next year when JURASSIC PARK 3D hits theaters on April 5, 2013.
