Cool Videos: Batman v Superman re-imagined as a 1940’s B&W serial

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Sure, Zack Snyder's upcoming BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE will have cutting-edge visual effects, muscle bound heroes, and a super-heroic budget to match, but wouldn't you rather it contain a murderous Superman, spinning newspapers, and a Bat-Parachute? If you answered yes, then Diane Bullock and Mike Schuster over at Vulture have got you covered. The video artists have melded together footage from the various Batman and Superman serials of the 1940's to re-imagine what BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE might have looked like had it been made back then.

The footage pulls from various sources, mostly from 1948's SUPERMAN, which starred Kirk Alyn as the titular character, a role which he would later reprise in ATOM MAN VS. SUPERMAN. I believe the Batman included here is Robert Lowery, who starred in BATMAN AND ROBIN, a fifteen-chapter serial released in 1949. If this concept looks at all familiar to you, it's because a different take on the same idea was floating around earlier this year. Vulture themselves acknowledged this and gave credit to Paul Cornish as well.

BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE opens on March 25, 2016.
