It sounds as if a sixth season of the fan favorite series LUCIFER could go up in flames, seeing as Warner Bros. is now at a stalemate due to contract disputes with the show's star, Tom Ellis.
A new report hailing from TVLine states that Ellis has declined the studio's latest offer, which of course spells trouble for the future of the show. The report also says that Ellis had finalized his contract extension for Season 6 last month, so depending on what shakes out, failure to honor the deal could find Ellis in breach of contract.
According to Warner Bros. TV, the studio has already "sweetened the pot" for Ellis on more than one occassion already. "Everyone wants Tom to be happy, but there's a limit, and it's been reached," said a source that remains close to the matter. Unfortunately, both Warner Bros. and Ellis' rep have refused to comment on what has transpired thus far.
Back in February, word that Netflix wanted to renew the series had reached the masses, thereby sending Luciphiles into a state of elated hysterics, myself included. Shortly thereafter, co-showrunners Ildy Modrovich and Joe Henderson inked new deals that would see them returning should production for Season 6 be greenlit. For the moment, Ellis' contract dispute is the only wrench in the works, as his co-stars are already commited to making an additional season.
Previously, Entertainment Weekly revealed that Inbar Lavi will guest star as Eve in the fifth season of what is technically a superhero drama series.
“We are so excited to have Inbar back!” said LUCIFER showrunners Ildy Modrovich and Joe Henderson to EW in a statement. “Last we saw her, Eve broke Maze’s heart. Soooo… a reunion between our favorite demon and the original sinner should go smoothly, right?”
Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis) and his beloved Chloe (Lauren German) are going to have one hell of a mess to clean up before the series can be put to rest. I don't want to get into spoilers here, but suffice it to say that the fourth season ended with both stars literally willing to go to Hell and back for one another. When the fifth season arrives, torturous decisions will have to be made – alongside many sacrifices – if Lucifer and Chloe are to strike a delicate balance between heaven and hell on earth.
“Both of them, based on where we left off in season 4, are in mourning in a way,” Brandt told EW during a set visit in October. “I think they are leaning into each other. Maze is of course mourning Eve, and definitely Lucifer going back without her; Chloe’s lost her love. They’re kind of holding onto each other as girlfriends do.”
German added: “We’re both heartbroken together because I’m missing Lucifer and she doesn’t really admit it but Maze is heartbroken from Eve leaving. She’s trying to forget about that as well, so we are going through a work/party phase together [in] episode 1.”
