Seven months ago, we heard a rumor that producer J.J. Abrams and his company Bad Robot were developing some sort of reboot of the Constantine property, which previously served as the basis of a 2005 film starring Keanu Reeves (watch it HERE) and a short-lived television series starring Matt Ryan – who continues to play the Constantine character on the CW's Legends of Tomorrow. It has now been confirmed that Bad Robot is working on a new version of Constantine, and further details have been revealed.
This new Constantine will be another TV series, and it's set up at the HBO Max streaming service. Guy Bolton has written the script for the pilot episode, and will be heading up the writers room when it opens next month.
John Constantine is
a British exorcist and occult detective who hunts the supernatural.
This HBO Max series will present him as a "young Londoner". The producers intend to find a "diverse lead" to play the character.
Bad Robot is also working with HBO Max on a Justice League Dark series. Constantine has been part of that team in the comics, so there could be crossovers between the Constantine series and the Justice League Dark show. Variety's sources have told them that will be the case. They were also told that Constantine will "focus more on the horror elements of the comics rather than the religious ones".
