Nine years ago, it was announced that writer/director Rob Zombie would be following his HALLOWEEN remake and its sequel with a remake of another famous genre property, THE BLOB. That announcement immediately stirred up controversy, not only because Zombie's take on HALLOWEEN had been quite divisive but also due to the quote he gave:
My intention is not to have a big red blobby thing — that’s the first thing I want to change. That gigantic Jello-looking thing might have been scary to audiences in the 1950s, but people would laugh now."
It wasn't long before Zombie decided to abandon THE BLOB and move on – but while he was attached to the project he had artist Alex Horley crafting concept art for it. Horley has since shared the artwork he did for THE BLOB online, and these images give us the only information we've ever had on just what Zombie's idea for this property was.
Judging by the visuals, it looks like Zombie's story dealt with some kind of mysterious monolith that begins turning people into grotesque, lumpy, slimy "blob people" creatures.
So it seems Zombie's approach was to turn THE BLOB into a sort of "infected people" / zombie movie. Oddly, a couple of the images are reminiscent of Robert Rodriguez's PLANET TERROR segment of the GRINDHOUSE double feature – which Zombie had contributed a faux trailer (WEREWOLF WOMEN OF THE SS) to two years before signing on to make THE BLOB.
I would much rather see another "big red blobby thing" than "blob people" in a new version of THE BLOB, but I have to admit that I wish I could have seen what Zombie's movie would have been like, especially after looking at the concept art.
Last we heard, a remake of THE BLOB was still in the works with Simon West attached to direct and Samuel L. Jackson set to star, but that was a while ago.
