While we have long waited for Schwarzenegger to reprise his role for a KING CONAN movie, time has trotted by and the film has never come to fruition. But, worry not! Netflix is going to let fans crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women because the streaming service is bringing us a new series based on CONAN THE BARBARIAN! That's right, the classic warrior character previously played by Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jason Momoa will grace our screens once more.
This represents the first project in a deal that Netflix signed with Conan Properties International which gives them the right to acquire the entire catalog of Conan novels and stories to develop shows and feature films. A search is currently underway for a showrunner and writer for the series. If Netflix's success with The Witcher is any indication, this could bode very well for CONAN THE BARBARIAN fans.
CONAN THE BARBARIAN is most often associated with the two films headlined by Arnold Schwarzenegger but the character has also been seen in the lackluster reboot led by Jason Momoa as well as an animated series and a syndicated live-action drama starring Ralf Moller. It was also, as of a few years ago, in development as an Amazon Prime series, but that fizzled early in development. This new project most likely puts a final nail in the coffin for KING CONAN, but here's hoping that Arnold would be willing to appear like an aged Conan or possibly in a different role.
Netflix continues to search for more IP to turn into franchise worthy series and movies. Aside from Stranger Things and The Witcher, Netflix is working on cinematic universes based on the works of Roald Dahl and The Chronicles of Narnia. Could CONAN THE BARBARIAN be the property they have been looking for? All of that may hinge on finding the right person to don the hairy underwear and baby oil while brandishing a gigantic sword. Stay tuned for news as it develops.
