My first exposure to Cliff Martinez's film work came with Joe Carnahan's NARC and I was immediately hooked. His ambience-filled, dark toned sounds provide an eerie and ethereal feel to any images they accompany and can be quite powerful when used to his full strengths, such as films like TRAFFIC, DRIVE, SPRING BREAKERS, The Knick, and much more. Now, the former Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer is lending his tunes to James Mangold's currently shooting UNTITLED WOLVERINE SEQUEL with Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Boyd Holbrook, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Stephen Merchant, RIchard E. Grant, and Eriq La Salle.
X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE was composed by Harry Gregson-Williams, while THE WOLVERINE had X-MEN alum Marco Beltrami on music detail. Both did serviceable jobs on each, but the inclusion of Martinez on this presumably darker and more intense R-rated version of Wolverine seems like a great pairing. Martinez is hardly the go-to-guy for a superhero film, but if you want to stir some emotions and create some atmosphere, he's a great choice (especially if rumors are to be believed that this may take cues from Old Man Logan comic). I look forward to hearing what he puts together and how it fits into the final films overall tone.
The Untitled Wolverine Sequel is set to slice into theaters on March 3, 2017.
