Many would scoff at the idea of a movie that centers on four veteran quartet players struggling with their lives and careers. Perhaps, not so much, if the quartet in question was made up of Philip Seymour Hoffman, Christopher Walken, and Catherine Keener (with Mark Ivanir making the fourth). That’s where I sat when I saw this trailer for A LATE QUARTET, which stars the aforementioned actors as a famous quartet struggling “to stay together in the face of death, competing egos and insuppressible lust.”
This is a very palatable set of actors to put in a film like this and it leaves me with a desire to see them chew some scenes and deliver the performances we’ve come to expect. I love the set up and the delivery of the trailer, which screams of a quiet storm of solid storytelling.
Take a look:
With THE MASTER set to release this month, Philip Seymour Hoffman will be ever-present in our minds, so there’s a good chance his performance there will help push A LATE QUARTET out to the masses. Directed by Yaron Zilberman (WATERMARKS documentary), the film is set to premiere at TIFF today with a limited release scheduled for November 2, 2012.
