The sitcom, Community, has had a bumpy run. From issues with one of the series’ stars, Chevy Chase, which led to his eventual absence on the show, to the later seasons hopping around different avenues when NBC didn’t renew episode orders. But fans of the show are loyal, and one of the recurring jokes is the phrase, “six seasons and a movie,” which began early on but continued as a rallying cry for the passionate fan movement. Well, it is happening, folks.
The series had hit its six-season benchmark, which is currently available on Netflix and Hulu. Recently, the NBC streaming service, Peacock, put in an order for a movie based on the college comedy. Series creator Dan Harmon will return to write along with Andrew Guest, and the show’s star, Joel McHale, will join Harmon as they both will also executive produce. Variety reports that the chairman of NBCUniversal television and streaming entertainment, Susan Rovner states,
‘Six seasons and a movie’ started out as a cheeky line from ‘Community’s early seasons and quickly ignited a passionate fan movement for this iconic, hilarious, and cool (cool, cool) NBC comedy. We’re incredibly grateful that 15 years later, we are able to deliver fans this promised movie and can’t wait to get to work with Dan Harmon, Andrew Guest, Joel McHale, Sony, and our partners at UTV to continue this epic comedy for Peacock audiences.”
There are currently no details of the plot or planned release date as the project is still in the development stages. One of the show’s regulars, Donald Glover, skyrocketed to success with a rap career as Childish Gambino and has currently wrapped up the successful FX series Atlanta, but there hasn’t been any announcement if the full cast, including Yvette Nicole Brown, is set to make a return. Except for the obvious omitting of Chevy Chase, whose falling out with the show led to the death of his character on the sitcom.
Community is currently available on Netflix and Hulu, but Peacock will also have streaming rights to season 6 as part of the movie deal.
