Now that enough time has passed for the confusion and rage caused by 2011’s GREEN LANTERN to subside, it’s time to recast the role of Hal Jordan and try and do it right this time. GREEN LANTERN CORPS will be the DCEU’s next attempt to bring the character to the big screen, and with him will be John Stewart, another character to take on the mantle as Green Lantern, and who already has a second actor vying for the role.
Common, known for a litany of supporting roles in movies like WANTED, SELMA and the upcoming JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 2, was once up for the role of the character back when George Miller was developing his JUSTICE LEAGUE movie, but of course that movie now lies at the bottom of an ocean trench. The actor/rapper recently spoke with IGN to promote WICK, and of course the matter of casting Stewart came up:
No, I haven't spoken to DC. John Stewart, the character, is amazing. When I had the opportunity of potentially being John Stewart, when we were working, I learned how he was part of the Green Lantern Corps and all that he was doing. He was kind of community-driven so I felt like, 'Oh, man, I love this character.’ He used his mind to do a lot of things so I connected with him. I just love the character, but I don't know, I haven't talked to DC about it but, you know, hey! Yeah, I would love [to]. That would be an honor to play John Stewart.
Common is not the only actor who is looking to play the famous hero though. Not too long ago actor Sterling K. Brown threw his hat into the ring, saying he “humbly submits” his name. Common his since gone on to have a small, essentially cameo appearance in last year’s SUICIDE SQUAD, but I think that was so forgettable he could play Stewart without disrupting any DCEU space-time continuums.
The role was already once Common’s so I don’t see why the actor can’t at least be considered this time around. He seems passionate about the role and has since grown as an actor, so I could get on board with his casting. But Brown would be a great choice too, and he's a hot commodity given his roles on the shows THE PEOPLE VS. O.J. SIMPSON: AMERICAN CRIME STORY and THIS IS US. Both would be awesome picks, so we essentially have our pick of the litter. But, just as I normally would when picking things from litters, I will only choose the one with the cutest nose. Only the best for me.
Common's next movie, JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 2, hits theaters February 10.
