While in the midst of prepping a re-start to production for JURASSIC WORLD: DOMINION, it's been announced that the film's director, Colin Trevorrow, is setting up another project at Universal Pictures centered on the mythical lost city of Atlantis. Based on a story by Trevorrow and Matt Charman (BRIDGE OF SPIES, THE CONNECTION), the filmmaker's Atlantis project will be written by Dante Harper, whose original spec All You Need Is Kill led to the making of Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt's EDGE OF TOMORROW. Harper is also the writer behind FOREVER, a new project that has ROGUE ONE director Gareth Edwards attached.
For Trevorrow's Atlantis project, the famed city of mystery will be set on a lost continent in the Indian Ocean between Africa, India and Oceania. It is a multicultural civilization with its own advanced technology. Trevorrow's been keeping the Atlantis project under his hat since 2018, so as to allow for his creative team — led by production designer Kevin Jenkins (JURASSIC WORLD: DOMINION) — ample time to research the project's themes and ideas, before delving into the scripting process.
One can only imagine what wonders await Trevorrow's Atlantis, especially if the filmmaker and his team plan on going in a less traditional direction when presenting the fabled city to audiences. Will Trevorrow's version arrive as something akin to Marvel's Wakanda? What manner of iconography will the set designs display when dressing the project's landscape? How will the world react to Atlanteans and their hyper-advanced technology? Perhaps these questions and more will be answered as Trevorrow's Atlantis thriller continues to take shape.
