If you've yet to have seen STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, consider the following to contain spoilers, albeit minor ones. STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS answered a few questions regardling the parentage of certain characters, but others were left a mystery, including just who Rey's (Daisy Ridley) mysterious yet long-absent parents are. Plenty of theories have been making the rounds since the film was released and STAR WARS: EPISODE IX director Colin Trevorrow spoke to Entertainment Tonight recently to promise that the big reveal won't be disappointing.
We're going to make sure that that answer is deeply and profoundly satisfying. Rey is a character that is important in this universe, not just in the context of The Force Awakens, but in the entire galaxy. She deserves it. We'll make sure that that answer is something that feels like it was something that happened a long time ago, far away, and we're just telling you what happened.
Although Trevorrow has been "working closely" with STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII director Rian Johnson, his comment seems to indicate that we may not get a concrete answer about Rey's parentage until the final installment of the Star Wars sequel trilogy. My bet is that she's the illegitimate love-child of Jar Jar Binks and Mara Jade. The new characters of STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS are undoubtedly the stars of this new trilogy, but you won't have to worry about the original Star Wars stars being left in the dust as Colin Trevorrow said that he wants their presence to be even greater in his film.
They are icons, but they're also people that have suffered tremendous loss and challenge over the course of all these films, [Episode IX] is something that needs to honor a story that's been told over a period of 40 years, I don't want to ignore any of it, and I respect all of it. It's something I think the fan base is going to embrace.
STAR WARS: EPISODE IX will hit theaters on May 24, 2019.
